Roofing insurance FAQs
Whether you’re new to buying business insurance or you’ve been trading for a while, here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about roofing insurance. You can also check out our business insurance FAQs.
As a roofer, you’re often coming into contact with third-party property and working around members of the public. This means there’s a risk that you could injure someone or cause accidental damage to someone else’s house. So although it may not be a legal requirement, it’s a good idea to protect yourself and your business with public liability insurance.
Bear in mind – some clients may insist that you have public liability insurance as a question of safety and trust.
And remember if you have people working for you, you’re required by law to have employers’ liability cover.
Yes – but it’s important to note that when you use heat producing equipment, you’ll need to ensure you meet the safety conditions governing its use. Otherwise your insurance will be invalid, and you’ll be unable to claim for the cost if something goes wrong.
You’ll find detail about this in the terms and condition of your roofing insurance policy. It’s also worth double-checking the guidance provided by the manufacturer of the equipment.
Roofers would benefit from:
- Tools insurance, in case your valuable equipment is lost, stolen or damaged.
- Contract works insurance, in case a large project you’re working on is impacted by fire, flood, storms, malicious damage or theft. This would cover your time and any materials or fittings you used if you had to redo part of a roofing project after a storm, for example.
At Simply Business, we compare a range of tailor-made quotes from leading insurers, all in one place. We’ll ask some questions about what type of jobs you take on, whether you have any employees, and how much your tools cost, and find a policy that suits you.
Your cover will depend on what type of insurance add-ons you’ve chosen. You should always read your policy documents carefully. However several things will always be excluded, such as:
- If you’ve deliberately caused damage or injury
- Injuries or property damage caused not in relation to a roofing contract
- Employees working off-shore.
If you use hear as part of your roofing work, you will need to declare this in the quote form. This will allow you to declare what percentage of your turnover relates to work with heat, because we understand that you may not be required to use heat on every job.
The level of cover you need will depend on what type of jobs you take on – the level of risk and how large your contracts tend to be. We’ll also look at the value of your equipment.
If you change your business legal structure from sole trader to limited company mid-way through your policy, give us a call straight away on 0333 0146 683. It’ll only take us a few minutes to cancel your existing policy and replace it with one that correctly covers your new legal structure. It’s worth bearing in mind that your insurer and premium amount may need to change.
