Tesco’s new maximum limit on fuel means that drivers can only fill two portable containers each visit, with no more than a combined capacity of 30 litres. The new rules apply to both petrol and diesel pumps.

The supermarket has announced new guidelines around which fuel containers are considered appropriate to use at their fuel stations. They must be clearly marked with:

  • a petrol or diesel label
  • the phrase highly flammable
  • a hazard warning sign
  • their capacity in litres

“Under the Petroleum Consolidation Regulations, we are required to have a policy in place to ensure the safe use of portable fuel containers at our petrol stations.”

Is this because of a fuel shortage?

There isn’t currently a fuel shortage in the UK. While a maximum fuel limit might lead to concerns about a fuel shortage, the current state is stable – especially in comparison to the fuel crisis in September 2021.

Tesco’s new limit is to comply with the Petroleum Consolidation Regulations.

Supermarket chains offer best fuel prices

Tesco and other leading supermarkets (Morrisons, Asda, and Sainsbury’s) offer the biggest savings to UK drivers, according to research from RAC. The average cost of fuel in the UK is 138.1p per litre for unleaded petrol , while supermarkets offer 134.8p per litre.

With the average cost to fill up a tank sitting at £75, supermarket stations are offering an average saving of £8.80 per tank fill-up.

And with fuel duty frozen for another year, drivers will be hoping fuel costs stay down.

Simon Williams, RAC Head of Policy said: “Even though fuel prices have crept up slightly over the last three months, 2024 was a better year at the pumps, with prices coming down by 14p for petrol and 16p for diesel from the high points seen at the end of April.”

He added: “Looking back, it’s quite clear that 2024 was a year of two halves for fuel, with the second proving far better as the lower cost of oil translated to cheaper prices on the forecourt.”
